The Big Bang TheoryΒ creator responds to Kaley Cuocoβs claim that he added s** scenes with her ex βto mess with her.β
The creator ofΒ The Big Bang Theory, Chuck Lorre, has responded to Cuocoβs past comments suggesting that additional intimate scenes were written for her and co-star Johnny Galecki after their real-life breakup.
Cuoco, who portrayed Penny in the hit sitcom , once speculated that these scenes were intentionally added to make things more uncomfortable for her and Galecki, with whom she had a two-year relationship.
Cuoco and Galecki, who played an on-screen couple throughout the series, dated from 2008 to 2010.
Despite their breakup, they maintained a professional and friendly relationship on set.
However, Cuoco noted an increase in the number of romantic scenes between their characters post-breakup.

Speaking on The Armchair ExpertΒ podcast in 2020, Cuoco recalled: βWhen we broke up, obviously it was a little sensitive for a minute, but I remember those weeks that Chuck [Lorre, the showβs creator] had written these episodes where all of a sudden our characters were like sleeping together every other second.β
She further speculated: βJohnny and I talk about it and I think he did that on purpose β just to f**k with us. If I was with [Chuck Lorre now], I would ask him, because that came out of nowhere. All of a sudden these characters were all up on each other.β
Lorre, however, addressed these claims inΒ The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story, a book by Jessica Radloff that provides an in-depth look at the show.

Addressing Cuocoβs suspicions, Lorre stated: βNo. Not at all. Making a good show has no room for f**king with anybody.β
He continued: βThereβs no, βLetβs mess with Kaley and Johnny.β The goal was to make a great show and make every minute of every episode count. And that was the only goal.β
The veteran producer further explained that there was no room for personal agendas when making a television show of such magnitude.
βWe donβt have that kind of freedom to risk a TV series that you put your heart and soul into to mess with somebodyβs head. No,β he said.
Lorre also dismissed the idea that production decisions were made to personally affect Cuoco and Galecki, adding humor to the situation:
βI think thatβs charming that they think we had the mental capacity to mess with them. Penny and Leonard having difficulty sustaining a relationship was one of the reasons to keep watching β to see if they could make it. You were rooting for them to find happiness.β
Johnny Galecki also addressed Lorreβs remarks in the book, reflecting on their past assumptions. He admitted: βI guess that was pretty egotistical of us to think that. [Laughs]. We were reading into things a little too much. Iβm going to sleep a little easier tonight.β
