For many people, traveling after retirement feels like a far-off goal. But some elderly couples have turned that goal into their daily life. One couple, in particular, has been living full-time on a cruise ship because it’s actually more affordable than regular housing.
Surprisingly, living on a cruise ship saves money.

With rising home prices and rent, especially after the pandemic, many families are struggling. People are searching for creative solutions, like tiny houses or turning vans into homes. But one retired couple found a different path. They’ve spent over 500 days living on a cruise ship.
“It’s a very unusual market,” said real estate expert Diana Olick.
Home prices and rent have shot up. In this situation, Jess and Marty Ansen discovered a lifestyle that suits them well. They boarded a Coral Princess cruise ship in June 2022 and have been enjoying it ever since. Marty simply said, “Whatever comes, book it.”
Their lifestyle offers both savings and excitement.
Compared to retirement homes, their cruise life is more affordable and offers many extras. They’ve enjoyed over 50 back-to-back cruises. They get benefits like fine dining, housekeeping, dancing, and other activities that keep them active. Jess even joked, “We don’t have to do the dishes or make the bed anymore.”
They’re also meeting new people along the way.
Life at sea has helped them make new friends, both among the staff and other passengers. The ship’s hotel manager said they’ve become a familiar part of the community on board.
Cruise life brings both travel and value.
For the Ansens, life on a cruise includes meals and activities in one package. They also get to visit many places without the hassle of constant packing and unpacking. Their choice shows that with some creativity, it’s possible to explore the world and manage costs at the same time.
