Real or Fake? Tips and Tools for Identifying AI-Generated Images

Artificial intelligence imagery is getting harder and harder to spot. In the best case scenario, we end up simply laughing at a funny moment that never actually happened. In the worst case, we buy into misinformation that warps our perception of what’s actually going on in the world. So, as technology continues moving at the […]

Quieter, Less Stressful Dental Drills Are in the Works

Thanks to local anesthesia, it’s typically not painful to get a cavity filled — but that doesn’t mean the process is stress-free. The loud, shrill whining sound of the dental drill in your mouth can be anxiety-inducing even if you can’t feel the device. What’s more, the fear this noisy tool evokes hinders some people from getting the procedures they need to maintain good dental hygiene.

The Strongest Material in the World Could Mean the End of Potholes, Per a Recent Trial

Potholes are damaging, dangerous, and just plain annoying, but an ultra-strong substance could pave the way for smoother roads in our future. Derived from graphite, graphene is 1 million times thinner than a human hair yet stronger than steel and diamond — and in a recent trial in Essex, England, graphene-enhanced asphalt was successfully rolled out on a public road.

Maintainers performed a hydrazine safety check on NASA’s X-59 at U.S. Air Force Plant 42 on 18 August 2025; hydrazine, though toxic, is a crucial in-flight engine restart backup being tested before first flight. A ‘son of Concorde’ that could fly from New York to London in under four hours is preparing for take-off. NASA’s X-59 quiet supersonic research aircraft is undergoing final safety tests before making its first flight. The aircraft is projected to fly at Mach 1.5, or approximately 990 mph (1,590 kph), meaning it could potentially fly nonstop from the UK capital to the Big Apple in approximately three hours and 44 minutes. Normal commercial flights generally take around seven to eight hours. The aircraft is designed to fly supersonic while generating a quiet thump rather than a loud sonic boom, a noise problem that has made such planes unsuitable for flying over populated areas. The X-59 is being tested at the U.S. Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, where safety systems are currently under evaluation.
